This weekend I watched the Ryder Cup matches and today, especially, I was tuned in the entire time.  I love watching golf almost as much as I like playing it. It is a sport that requires mental and emotional disipline if you want to succeed. It definitely helps to be in good shape - and that is why so many of the younger players are doing strength  training- but it is also a user-friendly sport for people with different disabilities. That is something I would like to address later on. For now I want to comment on the attitude of this teams' players.

This match seemed so different from the more recent ones.  The American Team had several Captain's picks who were young and unseasoned but they had enthusiasm which sparked some of the older players.  Jim Furyk's fist pumps and little dance were so uncharacteristic but were indicative of the team spirit that permeated this year's matches.  That is why I think the American team won and why I think any success often depends on the support you recieve from your peers.

When any of us make a committment to exercise or try to lead a more healthy lifestlye we need lots of support from many different people. This group can offer you that support. If we encourage each other to be our best and offer helpful suggestions we really can make a difference and make a positive difference to someone else.

Golfers today have increased the use of strength training equipment. However, if you only strength train, you will actually hurt your game. I have worked on many golfers in Florida, who strength train regularly, unfortunately they are suffering with back pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain. Why? They are not stretching, specifically Active Isolated stretching. The power of the golf awing comes from the flexiblility and drive of your hips. Without the flexibility, your new strength will just cause future injuries.
