Attended Hasek's Heros 1st Annual Willy O'Ree Event

From March 20-22, I attended the 1st Annual Hasek's Heroes Willie O'Ree Skills Showcase in Buffalo, NY.

This event was sponsored by the National Hockey League and the Buffalo Sabres and presented in conjunction with USA Hockey's Disabled Festival, the exclusive event brought together 28 boys and girls ages 13-16 from 11 youth hockey organizations that are members of the NHL's Hockey is for Everyoneinitiative.

The participants were provided with a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the NHL and an insightful guide into the hockey world.  They enhanced their skills through NCAA Division I presentations during the on-ice drills and skills showcase and also joined an on-ice clinic conducted by me and other NHL alumni.  At Albright Know Art Gallery, guest speakers provided valuable information about safety, goal setting and academic achievement and advised on what it takes to get to the next level.

The showcase was a cultural opportunity to meet NHL alumni, create new friendships, enjoy the attractions of Buffalo and attend the Buffalo Sabres vs.
Philadelphia Flyers game on March 20.  The weekend was culminated with a unique opportunity to play hockey on the ice at HSBC arena.

Dave Smith, NHL Director of Fitness and Medical, conducted the showcase drills.  He was joined by Canisius College Division I Head Coach
David Smith, NHL alumni and Division I players.

A little bit about Hasek’s Heroes….Founded by NHL legend
Dominik Hasek, Hasek's Heroes provides a foundation of athletic development and educational support, enabling children from low- to moderate-income families to achieve their life goals.  It provides them the opportunity to learn basic skating and hockey skills and, for those with the aptitude and commitment, the opportunity to participate in the tiered hockey development program.  Hasek's Heroes works in partnership with the Buffalo Public School System to promote academic achievement as an integral component of athletics.
