Team Holosfitness.com member Joe Eagan averaged over 20 mph for his 7 days of riding across Iowa. That's a great feat, considering the numerous hills on the course. The rest of the team didn't have the same level of success, but they managed to achieve average speeds in the high teens, just shy of the 20 mph mark.
Over a long race like this we all agreed that focusing on a regular, constant cadence is better than trying to increase your speed through a burst of energy. This is particularly true on hills. After a few days the team agreed that using the full range of gears on a hill and trying to maintain the same cadence or RPM that you would on normal flat ground is the best way up a hill. This way you will not tire as easily over a long race and you will find yourself in a more comfortable ride.
