Another Holosfitness.com member pointed out a terrific activity in Petoskey Michigan that I thought would be of interest. Ann spends a lot of time in Petoskey Michigan and likes to enjoy the local beaches with her dog, Payton. Walking Payton, a 90 pound golden retriever, is quite a workout. While normally Ann sticks to roads and sidewalks to make sure her golden gets enough exercise, while in Petoskey she utilizes the beaches and beach areas. These areas provide endless entertainment for her dog. With so many insects, plants, bushes, and animals to check out, Ann's dog comes back from the trip nearly exhausted from so much activity. Aside from the scenery, Ann enjoys walking along the Petoskey shoreline as it adds some difficulty to her normal walking routine. Having to repeatedly survey and navigate over the rocky shoreline is much more involved than a simple stroll down the side walk. Thus Ann finds she is working different sets of muscles in her legs than she would in a walk along even or paved ground. Ann also finds that more than half her energy is spent chasing after her dog when Payton tracks the scent of a nearby animal. In the end Ann and her golden come back tired, but with a welcome feeling of accomplishment.
If you live near a lake, ocean, or other body of water, try a stroll (with or without a pet) as a fun outdoor activity. As Ann pointed out, walking along a shore provides an added level of difficulty as you have to constantly survey the different rocks, paths, and other natural obstructions. This activity is also great for children as it can provide both exercise and a learning environment as the kids identify and explore plants and animals that may live along the shore line.
