The second stop on the Get Up! Get Out! Get Active! Initiative was Manhattan. Our time in Manhattan led us to view the area as a tale of two cities. On the one hand, nearly everyone who lives in Manhattan knows about Central Park and the great running trails in the area. Central Park is one of the nation's largest city parks and offers endless miles of trails on which you can go running or biking. Nearly all of these trails are closed off from vehicular traffic.
On the other hand is the Hudson River running trail. This is a less well known trail and one that is equally as convenient and scenic as the trails in Central Park. During the stop in Manhattan the Get Up! Get Out! Get Active! team took a morning run on this new running trail. We were very impressed with the quality of the trail and the ease with which you could achieve an unobstructed run. Also, since the trail is newer and less well known, it was not nearly as crowded as other trails in the city.
The Hudson River trail is a great way to mix-up your run (and not just stick with trotting around Central Park) and take in the views of lower Manhattan. Lower Manhattan has had a bit of a resurgence recently following the devastation of 9/11 and its great to see the city is committing resources to this area and once again the residents of lower Manhattan are able to enjoy all that the city has to offer.
If your ever in Manhattan and looking for a great way to get some exercise for free, check out both the Central Park Trails and the new Hudson River running path. We think you'll highly enjoy them.
