Bike (112 miles) 5:05:41 (22.0 mph pace):
3 loops of the same course. The bike was relatively flat with a 10mile "false flat" on the way out leading to a slight downhill on theway home. Also, there was a headwind on the way out (very strong onthe second loop) which made the ride back into Tempe very fast. If Iwere doing the race again today, I would consider changing my rearcassette from 12-25 to with more gear. I don’t think I ever used the25 and could have used more gear heading into town with the hills andwind in my favor. I evenly split each of the loops which was a verygood result for me. I was happy to keep it balanced.
I didn’t take it out too fast and was able to settle into a nice rhythm. Having three loops with the Joop Troop (cheering section) at the end of each one was a HUGE psychological advantage. It provided something to look forward to and some comic relief. (I will try and forward pictures of some of theposters they created). Oh, and some more good news: I taught myselfhow to pee while on the bike which I then repeated 5 times. Greatestthing ever.
Nutrition here was a bottle of Perpetuem (5-6 scoops), abottle of Heed (4 scoops). When the heed was gone I replaced it withwater from the rest stops. I also tried to finish one water bottlethrough each rest area before disposing of it at the rest area exitline. I also consumed 4 endurolytes. So far so good. Everything isgoing to plan. In fact, I finished the bike about 25 minutes ahead ofmy alotted time. Oh, and congrats, Joop. You just did the longestbike ride of your life. My only concern: Did I leave enough in thetank?
