While most people want to stay nice and warm indoors during the holiday season, decorating your house with holiday lights is a great way to keep the family active. Putting up lights is a good way to use muscles that you would never otherwise be active.
Muscle Groups: Upper body
Bundle up your family in their warmest winter gear. I cannot express strongly enough the need for a good pair of gloves. There is nothing more frustration than trying to put up a string of holiday lights when your hands are freezing. This can ruin the entire activity.
Plan your route of attack. While the intention here is to keep the family active, despite the winter weather, we don't want this done at the expense of a finely decorated house. Take inventory of your lights, and assign each member of the family a role. ONE PERSON SHOULD DEFINITELY BE THE LIGHT TESTER. The whole affair can be ruined if you go through the effort of stringing a bunch of holiday lights only to find out that the strand doesn't work. Always be prepared.
Use a step ladder or other apparatus so that you are not overreaching or placing yourself in danger. The point of the activity is to move parts of your body that otherwise wouldn't see activity, its not to prepare your family for their upcoming tryouts for Cirque de Soleil.
Keeping moving. The best way to stay warm is to keep moving. Jog in place, rub your mittens together, do jumping jacks, anything to keep the blood flowing and fight the cold. Sure you might be warmer inside on the couch, but after the those huge holiday meals, you'll regret not having been more active.
