I just can't help but think that since everyone else has these $3,000 triathlon specific bikes that they have some sort of advantage over me, but really while they may be more comfortable or smoother, I don't know if they're actually faster than a roadbike.

I definitely get the same feeling on the bike - however, I noticed in the last race that 10 or 15 people who zoomed by me on the bike were sucking wind on the run and I passed them like they were sitting down. Remember there are three parts to the race - all w/equal importance - it just seems like the bike gets so much focus.

My problem is in the bike portion of the race. I have a pretty good bike (a Jamis Ventura), but I feel like I am getting passed by everybody on the bike portion. I don't know if has to do with them being in better shape, competitors being more aerodynamic, or just having faster bikes. It seems like I'm peddling just as fast, but not going as fast.
