About Tony

Tony McKegney is a former NHL player and currently serves as an ambassador for the National Hockey League's Hockey is for Everyone initiative, a charitable effort that provides support and unique programming to not-for-profit youth hockey organizations across North America. Since its inception, Hockey is for Everyone has exposed more than 45,000 boys and girls to unique hockey experiences.

McKegney played more than 900 NHL games with seven different clubs from 1978-91. His long professional career spanned 21 seasons, mostly in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres and the Quebec Nordiques. In 1988, while playing for the St. Louis Blues, McKegney became the first black player in NHL history to score 40 goals in a season. Such an achievement would not be repeated by a black player until 2002, when Jarome Iginla registered 52 goals and 96 points, becoming the first black player in history to win the NHL’s regular season goal and point scoring titles.

Since retiring, McKegney has given back to the hockey community by volunteering his time to various youth hockey organizations throughout North America. His message of setting goals and "reaching for the stars" encapsulates the core principles of hockey: dedication, commitment and perseverance. McKegney also is an active member of the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association, which has raised millions of dollars for charities throughout Michigan, Southern Ontario and North America.

McKegney was chosen 32nd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1978, in what then was known as the NHL Amateur Draft after an impressive junior career with the Kingston Canadians of the Ontario Hockey Association. He scored 152 goals for Kingston, was named to the OHA first and second all-star teams once each, and played for Canada at the 1978 World Junior Championships.

A native of Montreal, Québec, McKegney currently resides in Sarnia, Ontario.
