You should definitely be able to find a good road bike for $800 to $1000. If you go less than $800, they might just be okay, but there's really no need to spend over $1000 unless you are a super serious biker. Cannondale's are good. I used to have one and recently moved to a Jamis. Both have been great quality and very reliable.
